FAQ

What is the difference between a terracotta tile flooring and "terracotta" type flooring.

The main difference is that handmade terracotta tiles are a completely natural product in other words the essence of nature : water, air and fire - all elements contained in this extraordinary substance which is then moulded by the hands of craftsmen, in line with today's bio-architecture. The "terracotta type" flooring tiles are generally machine produced in series, giving an imitation of the natural effect of hand made terracotta tiles with the use of enamels and serigraphic applications.

Can terracotta be used for outside installation ?

Naturally. Do not forget that our terracotta tiles are hand made and are moulded according to the same traditional techniques used by our ancestors many, many years ago thus maintaining the same anti-freeze properties that makes them last almost indefinitely. We suggest however that the tiles should be suitably treated in order to ensure their perfect state over a long period of time.

Does terracotta stain easily ?

As terracotta is a hand moulded product it is naturally very absorbing, therefore it is advisable to treat the tiles with suitable anti-stain products.

What is the most suitable product for terracotta?

A specific product for treating handmade terracotta does not exist. The actual market offers a wide range of different products, but we would suggest contacting a specialist for the installation and treatment of terracotta floorings or outside pavings.

In our opinion it is not advisable to use only water-repellent products. The partial effect is insufficient and over the years, besides using normal cleaning detergents, the original coating vanishes.

In the majority of case, but not always, this treatment is applied during installation of the flooring or pavings in order to facilitate cleaning the excess of cement mortar.

Wax-based products are also considered as insufficient as with the passing of time the surface coating tends to diminish.

It is advisable to ensure that the product being used is a specific anti-stain element against, oil spots, grease, coffee etc. unless of course you prefer to use the most antique anti-stain remedy - that is natural linseed oil.

To complete the treatment a floor wax can be used :
  1. a natural wax, if you prefer a natural effect
  2. coloured wax, if you prefer a different effect
As already suggested it is better to get specific advice from the manufacturers.

How do you clean terracotta tiles ?

As these tiles are handmade once they have been installed and suitably treated they do not require particular attention.

The terracotta tiles can be cleaned with the traditional cleaning aids,(broom and cleaning rags) and, if necessary, refreshened with a normal non-aggressive product which does not damage the above described protective coatings.
